WHY THE NEED FOR CHANGE?

The current situation

The current premises (since 2010) are rented once a month for the purpose of for Sukhamni Sahib Ji path (prayers), kirtan (devotional singing) and Guru Ka Langar (free kitchen). The space is in a central location and is well maintained by SHBC.

The current situation

The current premises (since 2010) are rented once a month for the purpose of for Sukhamni Sahib Ji path (prayers), kirtan (devotional singing) and Guru Ka Langar (free kitchen). The space is in a central location and is well maintained by SHBC.

The issues…

• Since 2004, the Sikh community has used ‘makeshift’/ temporary/ rented/ shared spaces to practice their faith. One of these spaces was in very poor condition. The current premises, as noted above, although is well maintained and in a desirable location etc., it is still a shared facility. As a result, a great deal of time and effort is required (every month) to prepare the space to the standard needed to receive the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This is unsustainable.

• In 2015, the cost of renting this facility was increased by almost 4 fold – from £100 per day to £378 per day – because the rent was now being calculated on an hourly basis.

•Akhand Path, which used to cost £300, is now £3,500. Costs will continue to increase. This is ‘lost’ revenue.

• The current premises are linked to Camberley Theatre and in 2016, after a change in management of the theatre, an issue arose about use of the kitchen, by the theatre to cook meat at the time that the kitchen was being hired and used by the Sikh community. This was disputed and the issue was settled in favour of the Sikh community. We may face similar challenges in the future.

• In 2021, the kitchen was condemned by the council because the extractor fan was considered not to comply with current regulations. Without access to a kitchen, langar was cooked in the homes of sevadars, until finally an agreement was reached with the council to make the necessary upgrade so that the kitchen can be in use again. This Sikh community contributed £10,700 towards the cost.

WHERE WE STARTED…

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SURREY of HEALTH’S SIKHS

In 2004, to meet the needs of their faith, the families came together once a month in the homes of individual members of the community for Sukhamni Sahib Ji path (prayers), kirtan (devotional singing) and Guru Ka Langar.

As the community continued to steadily grow, it became clear that homes were no longer suitable for accommodating larger congregations and the monthly meetings then took place in the Cadet Hall (Crawley Hill), in Camberley.

From the very start it was obvious that the facilities in this hall did not meet the needs of the community e.g. inadequate parking, inefficient heating etc. Being a shared facility, a great deal of time and effort was required to prepare the hall to the standard (of cleanliness) needed to receive the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This was unsustainable.

Camberley Sikh Association (CSA) formed in 2005 in response to the growing needs of an ever increasing Sikh population.

In 2010, with the support of Surrey Heath Borough Council (SHBC), CSA managed to secure an agreement to rent the Ian Goodchild Centre (IGC) for the sum of £100 per day, on the first Sunday of every month. In January, CSA arranged an annual Akhand Path (3 day event), at the cost of £300. With donations from the Sangat (congregation), these costs were manageable at that time, but it was always known that a time would come when something permanent will be needed.
